Do You Know How to Prevent Slip and Fall Accidents?

Michael Brandner • January 9, 2019

Slip and fall accidents are more common than you might expect, and the tragic part is that they are 100% preventable. Do you know how to prevent a slip and fall accident? Well, if not, you came to just the right place. Mike Brandner Law is here to help you prevent slip and fall accidents.

Clean the Surface

One of the most effective things you can do to prevent any slip and fall accident, especially if you are a business owner, is to clean the surface being walking on. If there are any spills, clean them up as soon as possible. If you can’t clean up the spill immediately, put up a wet floor sign to let others know the floor is slippery.

You should also make sure there are no loose accessories on the floor. For example, a rug that isn’t all the way flat could move unexpectedly and cause a slip and fall. Small objects on the floor should be picked up and put in their proper places. Keep the floor clear and free from any hazards that could cause harm.

Wear the Right Shoes

Even though wearing the right shoes applies more to those who frequently go outdoors, it is important to dress appropriately indoors so you don’t slip and fall. If you’ll be walking on carpet, you generally have nothing to worry about since the friction from the carpet alone is often enough to keep you standing.

However, tiled or wooden floors can be more dangerous, especially if they have been polished or waxed. Because of this, you should wear shoes that are comfortable with grip. Remember, the main reason for slipping and falling is poor friction/traction. So, wear shoes that help you out in this regard.

Walk at the Right Pace

Even if you wear the right shoes, walking or running too quickly can sometimes cause you to slip and fall. Walk at a reasonable pace, and make each step deliberate. Don’t turn corners too sharply. Walk at an even, steady pace, and watch out for people around you. Try not to bump into others. Lastly, if you see that the floor looks slippery, avoid that area.

Eliminate Hazards

Certain hazards can cause the floor to become more slippery. For example, rain can make sidewalks much more slippery than normal. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot avoid these hazards, be extra cautious. However, some hazards can be eliminated. For example, if you have a beverage on the edge of your desk, you should probably move it so it doesn’t spill and cause a mess. This will help protect not only yourself but also others from slipping and suffering from injury.
