New Orleans COVID-19 Rideshare Safety

Michael Brandner • March 26, 2020

Louisiana has been hit hard by the latest coronavirus strain. While our state isn’t the largest in America, it’s among the top five in both confirmed coronavirus infections and COVID-19 deaths. New Orleans alone has more than 18,000 confirmed cases and 656 deaths as of December 14, 2020.

While there are many things Louisianans can do to increase their COVID-19 safety, taxi, Lyft, and Uber drivers are presented with additional challenges. Drivers have higher risks, since they can’t follow the best social distancing practices and will be in close contact with many people. To help taxi and rideshare drivers cope with the coronavirus pandemic, Mike Brandner Law has put together a list of COVID-19 rideshare safety tips.

New Orleans COVID-19 Rideshare Safety Tips

Although social distancing is recommended, some Lyft, Uber, and taxi drivers must continue to work in order to make ends meet. Additionally, they provide a valuable service for people that rely on them to procure food, medical products, and household goods. To help lower the risk of a coronavirus infection, here are some things drivers can do.

  • Wash your hands as often as possible for at least 20 seconds using soap and water
  • Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content if you’re unable to wash your hands
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue, your elbow, or your forearm instead of your hands
  • Ask passengers to sit in the back seat
  • Have tissues and hand sanitizer available for your passengers
  • Avoid the handling of money
  • Use nitrile gloves if you must collect money from a passenger (one pair per transaction)
  • Disinfect your vehicle between passengers

These additional safety measures will take time and cut into your hourly earnings, but your long-term health is far more important than short-term gains. Please follow these safety tips for your health and the health of your passengers.

COVID-19 Rideshare Safety Alternatives

Some Lyft, Uber, and taxi drivers will not want to drive passengers during this turbulent period. This is an understandable stance. However, there are still ways to drive, earn money, and help the New Orleans community. Many local and large businesses need drivers to deliver goods. If you’d still like to drive for money then consider working the following businesses.

  • Local drugstores and pharmacies
  • Local grocery stores
  • Local restaurants
  • Amazon
  • Doordash
  • Grubhub
  • Instacart
  • Postmates
  • Shipt
  • UberEats
