While the world has changed in a myriad of ways, not all change has been for the health benefit of humankind. A concerning development, the JUUL e-cigarette, has swept through our nation and unfortunately seems to have a foothold in both minors and adults. Effects of using JUUL products can include addiction, pneumonia, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, or eosinophilic pneumonia, which can result in lengthy hospital stays.
Youth JUUL Addiction Prevention
JUUL has been particularly troublesome with youth and minor populations. The product represents more than half of the entire e-cigarette market share. This accomplishment occurred in just 4 years. Many insiders attribute the success of JUUL to the sleek design, which many could easily mistake it for a flash drive, making it easy to conceal and disguise. Additionally, the array of available youth-appealing flavors such as fruit medley, mango, cool cucumber, and creme brulee certainly makes this product more tempting. In turn, e-cigarettes can become habit forming and result in a long-term addiction that carries over into adulthood.
A JUUL Labs spokesperson stated that the company has been working with social media platforms to remove JUUL-related content that involves young people. So far, they have deleted more than 4,000 vape-related posts from Instagram and Facebook collectively.
According to Kaiser Health News, schools are also beginning programs to discourage and prevent JUUL use by their students. Pop culture has even started spoofing of the ‘vaping’ trend, with South Park rolling out an episode addressing kindergartners vaping.
The JUUL products are designed with smokers in mind, from the easy-to-use technological format to tempting flavors. One of the dangers comes precisely from its ease of use, as there are no buttons or switches.
The JUUL vaporizer regulates temperature control and uses nicotine salts naturally found in the leaf of the tobacco rather than free-base nicotine, unlike standard e-cigarettes. The most dangerous aspect of a JUUL? The pods. A single pod, usually a week’s supply, can contain the same amount of nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes.
Legally, anyone under the age of 18 (or 21 in some areas)should not be able to purchase any tobacco products, including JUUL.
If you or someone in your family has suffered e-cigarette injury, including from lung disease or injuries from exploding e-cigarette devices, please seek the advice of an experienced e-cig lawyer to help you evaluate your insurance and compensation options.
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) notified the most popular e-cigarette devices that they have 60 days to prove they make efforts to keep their devices away from minors. On October 24, 2018, the FDA declared that teenage use of e-cigarettes has reached epidemic proportions.
Unfortunately, minors already seem to have access to the JUUL products and other e-cigarettes. Dr. Scott Gottlieb, FDA commissioner, stated that over two million middle and high school students were regular users of e-cigarettes last year.
Tightening the regulations also includes asking JUUL Labs to submit all documents related to:
- Marketing efforts,
- Health effects,
- And use among minors.
Issues with e-cigarette-like tobacco products won’t end until the FDA fully regulates and establishes a strong review process, akin to those that regulate regular cigarettes, before the product hits the market to prevent sales of these products to minors in the first place.
The tightening of the regulations is part of sweeping government action targeting both manufacturers and distributors of e-cigarettes. If the five major manufacturers, including JUUL Labs, fail to stop sales to minors, said the FDA, all their flavored products could be removed from the market. It also raised the possibility of civil or criminal charges if companies allow bulk sales through their websites.
Local and State Laws
Some cities and states have crafted their own regulations to limit or ban the sale of e-cigarettes and JUULs. For example, San Francisco is the first city to ban the sale of e-cigarettes. Additionally, Michigan recently just banned the use of e-cigarettes, as well. As people come to know the harmful effects of e-cigarettes, many other cities and states may follow suit.
Big Tobacco 2.0: JUUL Did Not Indicate its Products Contained Nicotine
Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that’s responsible for millions of people indulging in unhealthy habits, like smoking cigarettes or using chewing tobacco. Excessive nicotine has been clinically proven to have many negative effects on the human body and may lead to immune system, cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal disorders.
Prior to November 2018, allegation against JUUL claim the company failed to warn consumers that its products contained this addictive and dangerous substance. Research suggests that many young people were unaware that JUUL products contained nicotine, thinking that they were just inhaling flavorful vapor.
The Truth Initiative claims that this lack of awareness is the direct result of JUUL repeatedly downplaying the dangers linked to vaping with an e-cigarette. Further, the initiative claims that JUUL studied and then later implemented the tone and tactics used by the Big Tobabcco industry to push tobacco cigarettes back in the 1990s—thus, putting a new generation in harm’s way of forming an addiction and other serious health concerns out of a risk for profit.
Because of JUUL and other e-cigarette companies infiltration into the lives of school-aged minors and other vulnerable groups, the vaping industry is now being referred to as Big Tobacco 2.0.
