Many studies have identified links between aggressive driving, psychological issues and substance abuse with greater risks for auto accidents. This study chose to expand on that research and determine if there is a connection between driving and individuals with traumatic brain injuries.
Although driving can seem like a simple task, the act does require a significant amount of cognitive function and concentration. These can become impaired by traumatic brain injuries. For this reason, researchers felt it was an important link to study.
The study interviewed and analyzed the driving histories of more than 4,000 individuals ages 18-97. Although the research is still in its initial stages, the results showed that those with at least one TBI also had greater instances of aggressive driving, which has shown to lead to more auto accidents.
Studying the link between head injuries, road rage and car wrecks is important. It ultimately paves the way in implementing preventative measures, such as traffic safety laws. Understanding how head trauma plays a part in behavior could ultimately improve safety on the road.
Road rage presents a separate danger to be aware of. At the moment, brain injuries and road rage don’t have a link, but studies may be underway soon.
