What is the Valsartan Recall and Will it Affect Me this Holiday Season?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a statement about the agency’s ongoing Valsartan investigation. The investigation concerns the recent voluntary recall of several drug products containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient Valsartan. When used as prescribed, Valsartan is meant to treat high blood pressure and heart failure.
Have you or a loved one been affected by these recalls? Developed cancer following an extended use of a Valsartan-based medicine? Contact Mike Brandner Injury Attorneys today to understand just what compensation you may be entitled to.
The Valsartan recall is to inform consumers about the high blood pressure and heart failure drugs that may have been affected by contamination. Based on recent lab results, NDMA, an organic chemical that forms in both industrial and natural processes, was found in a batch of Valsartan-based medicine. NDMA previously has been used to make liquid rocket fuel, softeners and lubricants, among other products. It can be unintentionally produced through certain chemical reactions. It is a byproduct from some pesticide manufacturing.
Medicines to pay attention to
Medicines recalled thus far include tablets sold by specific pharmaceutical carriers such as:
- AvKare (Teva/Actavis) and (Hetero/Camber),
- A-S Medication Solutions LLC (Teva/Actavis & Prinston/Solco),
- Bryant Ranch Prepack Inc. (Teva/Actavis),
- Hetero Labs (labeled as Camber Pharmaceuticals Inc.),
- H J Harkins Co.,
- Northwind Pharmaceuticals (Teva/Actavis),
- NuCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Prinston/Solco) and also many more.
Valsartan Recalls Found
The FDA’s latest product testing shows an additional unexpected impurity of NDEA in three batches of Torrent Pharmaceuticals’ recalled Valsartan products. N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) is a known animal and human carcinogen, or cancer causing substance. These Torrent products were recalled by the company in August 2018.
The FDA news release was released after 22 other countries issued recalls involving over 2,000 Valsartan batches that were sent to to Germany, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Portugal, Belgium, France, Poland, Croatia, Lithuania, Greece, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Malta and lastly, Bahrain.
The US Food and Drug Administration stated in a news release recently that “the presence of NDMA was unexpected” and was thought to be related to changes in the way the substance was manufactured.
How Can the Valsartan Recall Affect Me?
The FDA continues to work with the affected companies to reduce chances of this recall happening again. Patients in the US taking Valsartan medications or similar medications such as Diovan, Diovan HCT, Exforge, Exforge HCT or Entresto should continue as directed by their physicians.
Amlodipine can be used and found in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure and also chest pain. A health care professional could also help provide information about other Valsartan-containing products or alternative treatment options.
Above all, many people in the US remain uncertain on what to do ever since this US recall on Valsartan drugs. The good news? Not all Valsartan drugs contain the impurity. The FDA notes that patients should definitely look at the drug name and company name on the labels of their prescription bottles. Lastly, since this recall, the external supplier linked to the problem has stopped distributing its Valsartan ingredient.
