Gadolinium-based dyes for MRIs have been tied to potentially rare and even deadly health problems, including gadolinium toxicity, GDD and many other side effects.  Has someone you know, and love received a negative diagnosis of complications after undergoing an MRI with a GBCA dye? You or your loved ones may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost income and pain and suffering, among other losses.

Our firm is currently working with experienced gadolinium toxicity lawyers across the country. Mike Brandner Injury Attorneys charge no fee unless you get an award or settlement. For a free consultation, call us 24/7 or fill out our online contact form.

Side Effects

Many side effects have been discovered and reported in conjunction with the use of gadolinium; including gadolinium toxicity. The toxicity occurs when high levels of the substance stay in the body. Because it remains in the body, it can cause severe damage to the nervous system. This generally means that victims experience pain, loss of memory, loss of mobility, and persistent headaches.

Another disease reportedly caused by gadolinium is Gadolinium deposition disease or GDD. GDD occurs when a person has normal or adequate renal function but develops persistent and/or painful symptoms ranging anywhere from a few hours to several weeks after injection of a gadolinium contrast agent.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Severe degradation of vision and dry eyes
  • Hair Loss
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Brain fog
  • Chronic headaches
  • Trouble speaking (weakening of voice)
  • Burning, cutting or sharp pains in a patient’s arms, legs or torso.
  • Itching skin
  • Changes in color lesions, thickening, and tightness, etc. of your skin.
  • Feelings of sharp pins and needles
  • Tingling and/or prickling pains
  • Deep bone and joint pains
  • Muscle twitches or severe weakness
  • Trouble with swallowing
  • Nausea and/or vomiting

Research has indicated that gadolinium in the body can be dangerous to any patient regardless of age at any dosage level. However, patients with malfunctioning kidneys are unfortunately more likely to develop serious and possibly fatal side effects.

Patients who have received gadolinium before their MRIs have suffered various side effects, ranging in severity. Studies suggest that elevated levels of the metallic compound in the body, otherwise known as gadolinium toxicity, is the cause. Recent studies have also shown that the assumption that gadolinium filters through the kidneys and exits the body through the urine may not be true in all cases.

In fact, scientific data supports the fact that the metallic substance can remain in the body. Because of this, patients can experience serious and even life-threatening side effects. Patients who have impaired kidney functionality are at an elevated risk of suffering serious side effects after being administered gadolinium-based contrast dyes. This new information has caused many scientific and also, healthcare experts to question whether gadolinium-based contrast agents are actually safe.

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned and informed the public that the body retains GBCA. The FDA approved new medication guidelines for patients who may receive a dye prior to their MRI because of this retention.

These guidelines take into consideration the serious health concerns and dangers associated with these contrast dyes. Under the guidelines, doctors are instructed to consider the tendency of the element to remain in the body after administration.

Doctors should further consider the possible side effects the contrast could have on their patients with any pre-existing conditions that could make any side effects more severe. Patients who may be at a higher risk of serious complications include those who have reduced kidney function, and those who are pregnant.

In May 2007, the FDA required the manufacturers of these defective treatments to add “black box warnings” to the packaging of their products. Despite the compliance to the mandate, manufacturers may still be liable for the harm caused by their products.

Until the FDA changed the guidelines, many did not have reason to contemplate a gadolinium MRI dye lawsuit. The risks of using gadolinium have also begun to surface.

MRI-Gadolinium Side Effects

Other people who received gadolinium injections prior to MRIs have received a diagnosis with several different side effects.

Side effects can include:

  •        Pain – aches; tingling, burning sensations. Usually the pain presents in extremities or joints, and occurs around where the MRI happens.
  •        Skin changes – tightness, itchy skin, lesions, discoloration, often in extremities.
  •        Muscle spasms –minor, local, rapid contractions and also, weakness in muscles.
  •        Eye problems – vision loss, dry or bloodshot eyes.
  •        Memory problems
  •        Tinnitus,
  •        Swallowing difficulties
  •        Vocal problems
  •        Loss of hair
  •        Balance problems
  •        Swelling of extremities

Contrast Agents can remain in the Brain

The Mayo Clinic has recently found the potential for GBCA residue to remain in the brains of people who have undergone multiple contrast-enhanced MRI exams.

Emanuel Kanal, M.D., director of magnetic resonance services and professor of Radiology and Neuroradiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has said, “We now have clear evidence that the administration of various gadolinium-based contrast agents results in notably varied levels of accumulation of residual gadolinium in the brain.”

Dr. Kanal said that gadolinium-based contrast agents have been valuable to patients worldwide, but doctors also can’t ignore the new findings and continue prescribing MRIs with GBCA “without change.”
