What are SGLT2 inhibitor drugs?

SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) inhibitor drugs are a class of antidiabetics that were prescribed to improve glycemic control in people with Type 2 diabetes.

These inhibitor drugs do this by blocking SGLT2, which makes it easier for a person’s kidneys to remove glucose from their blood and then expel it via urine. This process results in a decrease in blood glucose levels.

The following SGLT2 drugs have been linked to dangerous side effects that are potentially life-threatening:

  • Invokana® (canagliflozin)
  • Invokamet® (canagliflozin/metformin)
  • Also, Jardiance® (empagliflozin)
  • Xigduo XR® (dapagliflozin/metformin)
  • Farxiga® (dapagliflozin)
  • Lastly, Glyxambi® (empagliflozin/linagliptin)
