Being an officer is a tough job. Each day these officers go out to protect the community and work to keep our streets safe for you and your family. May 14 through 20 is National Police Week and at Mike Brandner Injury Attorneys, our New Orleans personal injury attorneys would like to highlight reasons why we should appreciate our local law enforcement officers.

Adopt-A-Block

The NOPD is working to keep New Orleans safe with the Adopt-a-Block and SafeCam initiatives. These programs goals are to increase number of private security cameras in areas that are prone to criminal activity. The programs work in coordination with businesses, churches and homeowners to install security cameras in priority neighborhoods.

Cops for Kids

This program provides a summer camp for 150 at-risk Orleans Parish kids between 5 and 12 years old. It provides educational and enriching activities for the kids while working to strengthen relationships between the kids, their families and the police.

Annual National Night Out Against Crime

For the past 33 years, the NOPD has sponsored the Annual National Night Out Against Crime in New Orleans. The goals of this community-wide event are to raise awareness of crime prevention, reduce crime in the community and increase community support for law enforcement. Citizens are invited each year to participate by hosting a block party for their neighborhood.

Volunteers Can Also Lead VoCal Program

NOPD invites residents from the community to apply for the VoCal program. Participants in this program are trained, provided with uniforms and given the opportunity to assist the NOPD in several ways, including:

  • Helping run and generate ideas for crime prevention programs;
  • Also, providing information to tourists who visit the Eighth District Station;
  • Performing clerical duties in District Stations;
  • Lastly, acting as greeters and assisting visitors at the Police Headquarters’ reception desk.

Citizen’s Police Academy

The NOPD Crime Prevention Unit manages the Citizen’s Police Academy. This program provides residents with info on different functions of the NOPD and also offers opportunities for involvement with community policing efforts.
